"Death at Sea" is a 2024 documentary directed by Sara Pipernos that investigates the circumstances surrounding the unexplained death of fisheries observer Eritara Aati Kaierua in March 2020. The film features insights from Eritara's wife, Tekarara Kabangaki, and his sister, Nicky Kaierua, shedding light on the risks faced by fisheries observers and the challenges their families encounter in the event of tragedies. The documentary aims to raise awareness and advocate for policy reforms to enhance protections for observers working on commercial fishing vessels.
The score mainly features electronic-ambient textures accompanied by strings and piano, aiming to mirror the emotional depth and significance of the documentary's subject matter. It also includes subtle elements such as guitar and panpipes that give us a sense of the location (Fiji) combined with manipulated boat sound design.
